Before you hire a contractor for a renovation or home project make sure the contractor is properly insured. If they aren’t, you could be held liable for any injuries or damages that occur while they’re working at your home. In order to check if a contractor is properly insured you can request a certificate/evidence of insurance be sent to you from the contractor’s insurance agent. This should include the following:
- contractor’s line of work (i.e. plumber)
- effective and expiration dates of the policy (make sure the policy is current)
- coverage
- insurance carrier
- and policy number(s)
In the event of faulty work, you will already have the information you need to file a claim.
Specific coverages to look for include:
- Commercial General Liability Insurance- Covers physical injury or property damage that occurred during contracting work
- Worker’s Compensation Insurance- This covers the company’s employees if they get hurt on the job.
*Make sure you request the same insurance information for any subcontractors that your contractor hires as well.
